Very many of us use free anti-virus software. I have it, as you know in a couple of my computers, but I also have commercial packages to some others. But can we really rely on an antivirus that is free? The serve is no money in them, so how could they keep up with developments?

In an interview criticizes David Hall, product manager at Symantec, the free antivirus programs pretty hard. He believes that they certainly can not offer as good protection from commercial software – such as Norton Antivirus and the others. According to Hall, is the technology of free antivirus, including Microsoft Security Essentials and the famous AVG and Avast!, Not sufficiently sophisticated to be able to protect against today’s virus attacks.

Most viruses spread today by web pages. This is called drive-by downloads, and means that you visit an infected Web page that automatically downloads and installs the virus on your computer. Virus infection occurs not only through the security hole in the browser, but it is very common to instead use a hole in the Appendix for the browser – QuickTime, RealPlayer and Flash. Hall explains that it is not at all certain that the free anti-virus software offers a good protection against this type of attacks. Better is to buy a security package.

The virus “Downadup” continues to spread. According to security company F-Secure had the virus round the 20 January 2009 already infected 8.9 million computers. Many believed that there was the peak. But that is not the case. The virus has continued to spread, to mutate to the other versions. Therefore, it is difficult for antivirus programs to end the misery.

“Downadup” spreads by exploiting a security hole in Windows. Have you the function “Automatic Updates” turned on, closes the security hole automatically.

The best way to avoid “Downadup is so clearly to having a really good antivirus program, which ensures that the virus does not install itself on your computer. However, if the misfortune is arrived and one of the versions of Downadup – or Conficker and Kido, which they also is called – infecting your PC, there is still opportunity to save the system.

Security company BitDefender has for safety’s sake, has developed a software to remove Downadup – from an infected computer. Downadup Removal Tool can be downloaded free on the website BDTools.

If you are worried about the infection, you can easily check it with the boot a ‘Quick Scan’ via the website bdtools.net

Tjk write that the Security company Sophos reports that the malicious code JSRedir-R is spreading like wildfire over the Web. It is a code that infects web pages and then try to spread to users who visit the pages. This type of attacks and threats have become huge in recent years. The security specialists I usually talk to, is all agree that the Web is the most dangerous to spread code today.

JSRedir-R has become so large that it accounts for 42 percent of all infections on the Web, according to Sophos. The code in JSRedir-R trying to download other malicious code to the user’s computer. The security firm also provided on there site that it currently expects that a new Web page is infected every 4.5 seconds. Its become a lot in a few weeks time

To protect themselves against infected Web pages it is necessary to have an antivirus program that also scans the web pages for dangerous code. That it would be safe to surf the web on the avoidance of suspect sites, such as porno sites and crack databases, is nothing but a myth. This type of code, spread the same amount of legitimate sites. Among other uses the cyber criminals ad scripts, and other things that run on third-party servers to infect known sites. It was not so long ago that malicious code appeared on such as on CNN.
