the-user-manual-site

Do you miss the manual for your router or wireless phone, or has the dog eaten up the manual for your cell phone or wireless router? If the guide to a thing is gone, then can you be absolutely sure you need it. It is Murphy’s Law … Then you should take a look at The User Manual Site. It has indexed over 300,000 manuals from the Web, in PDF format. I did some searches on different stuff I have at my home office and it gave good results.

To use the service is simple. Just enter the name and product name in the search field, and do a search. The site uses an auto-completion feature in the search field so that you get the options just by typing parts of the product name. Once you got a hit, just click the PDF file, and print it if you need.

If you not found your guide at The User Manual Site, you can take a look at another site. SafeManuals.com is the website that can come to the rescue. There are almost 900,000 (nine hundred thousand) handbooks, manuals and user guides posted in PDF format. It is just keying in the name of your electronic things, whatever it may be, and see if it is included in the database. Do you get a hit, can you free download the manual in PDF format, to read on screen or print. This article did I found in TkJ. Thanks Tommy.

Free fonts are never wrong! Especially if they are really nice and also new. Sometimes bloggers are lying when they say that the fonts are new, but I could not recognize any of the 40 fonts listed in instantShift – and I usually have pretty good track of free fonts.

free-fronts

A lot of fonts on the list were really refreshing, actually. Chunk was the first that I stuck to. It is similar to Rockwell, but feels a little softer. Although Carto Gothic Std was really good, and even if use area is niche so download I Juicy Hunt.

If you’ve followed my blog a while, you know that I usually come back to free fonts on a regular basis. Therefore there is a lot to find in my archives, if you are interested in more. Here you will find for example the best sites for free fonts and a bunch of single links in the free fonts. This nice article come from TkJ.

Very many of us use free anti-virus software. I have it, as you know in a couple of my computers, but I also have commercial packages to some others. But can we really rely on an antivirus that is free? The serve is no money in them, so how could they keep up with developments?

In an interview criticizes David Hall, product manager at Symantec, the free antivirus programs pretty hard. He believes that they certainly can not offer as good protection from commercial software – such as Norton Antivirus and the others. According to Hall, is the technology of free antivirus, including Microsoft Security Essentials and the famous AVG and Avast!, Not sufficiently sophisticated to be able to protect against today’s virus attacks.

Most viruses spread today by web pages. This is called drive-by downloads, and means that you visit an infected Web page that automatically downloads and installs the virus on your computer. Virus infection occurs not only through the security hole in the browser, but it is very common to instead use a hole in the Appendix for the browser – QuickTime, RealPlayer and Flash. Hall explains that it is not at all certain that the free anti-virus software offers a good protection against this type of attacks. Better is to buy a security package.

What do you think?

secunia-program

According to Security Company Secunia have 98 percent of all Windows computers at least one insecure program installed. These are all possible forms of applications that have security holes and other problems. As a rule, clogging the holes again continuously by the developers, but it is not at all certain that users know that there are free updates.

It is important to ensure that your programs are updated, especially if it’s critical security hole. Cyber Criminals exploit these security holes to get access to computers, spread viruses and Trojans, and so on. It is not the only browser that is important to update. Security holes discovers in most types of software.
Secunia has a free tool called the Personal Software Inspector (PSI). I have written on the PSI before, but now has it updated, I thought is worthwhile to pay attention to it again. The program keeps track of your applications and then checks it against Secunias Security database, to test if the installed version needed updating. In the new version of PSI checks Browser Add-Ins – i.e. additions in the browser.

This is a clearly important part to keep track of. Security hole as found in Appendix for the browser is of course a great danger, because it can open up your computer for attacks from infected websites. With PSI installed, can you search your computer for problems, and you can also allow the program to be resident in the memory, for tell you when new updates coming. (this article did I found at TkJ, thanks Tommy).

gimp

GIMP is the open source – world’s answer to Photoshop. It is a complex image manipulation program full of functions and tools, and it is also completely free. You can download it for both Windows and Linux. The latest version is 2.6.6, and it contains many news.

I find an article of Six Revisions, which lists 10 websites with schools, guides and other articles with has to do with GIMP. Do you want to learn to master this great program in image editing, is this really good websites to begin with. If you think that GIMP is a bit too complex for your taste, are there a lot of other free image-editing programs. Two of my favorites are Paint.NET and Photoscape. They are both easy to use, have simple and logical interface and is also free.

GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program and was originally developed for Linux / Unix. It has however since several years been closed for Windows. GIMP is an enormously complex tools, and by that I mean that the learning threshold is relatively high, but above all that the program contains many and very good functions. You can very well compare GIMP with Photoshop.

That who probably is the most unaccustomed with GIMP is that the interface is different from the other of Windows programs, because it is was closed from Unix. But it is really no major differences, and once you come over the threshold, it is no problem. Once you start using GIMP, you will realize that it is an excellent tool for imaging, image editing and photo retouching. This article did found I in TkJ.

hongkiat best web page

Google, Yahoo and Bing are all very well, but if you want to be a real search pro, then must you find the specifics search engines that focus on specific areas such as music, videos, photos and more. I have bloged about specific search engines before, but if you want a good overview, then I think you should take a look at Hong Kiats huge list of over 100 alternative search engines. Perhaps it is so you can find your own favorites here!

Here are specialized search engines to find PDF documents, MP3 music, videos, files and more. One of those mentioned are PDFGeni. That have I tested and I thought it was really good to find PDF documents of various kinds. Are you looking for documentation, articles and other so PDFGeni is a good tip. The advantage of using alternative search engines is to find more relevant information directly, faster and more accurate searches. I can also tip about Cuile, who claims to have indexed more pages than Google.

blind-search1

Tommy with TjK wrote this nice article. Search engines needs for find things on the web. For many surfers, there is only one search engine, and it is Google. The reason is so simply, that many do not know that there are other search engines. But it does, and many works for most users either as good or better than Google.

Which of the search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing do you like most? Most of us says Google safe, but the question is what you had responded in a blind test? This is where Blind Search comes into the picture. It is well emphasized that the service is mostly for fun, even if it is right interesting to see how different the three search engines hits.

Blind Search function easily. You fill in a search word in the box at the top of the site and click Search. Now, a search be made on the three search engines and displays results in three columns. You don’t know which of the column is respective which search engine. Select the results you think is best, and click on the bottom Vote for this search engine.

How was the result? Choose you the search engine that you have as favorites, or was it someone else who turned out to see better than the favorite?

microsoft-antivirus-morro1According to the Swedish magazine PC Magazine will Microsoft soon be launching an early test version of a free antivirus (codenamed “Morro”). Right now it seems that the employees on the company are testing the program. The news tells us also they will compete with McAfee and Symantec.

For just a little while ago I read about a director in of one of the leading antivirus companies. He said, inter alias, that Microsoft’s attempt to break into the market. He claimed that he was not especially worried about the competition. The thing is that Microsoft has tried to come in to the antivirus and security market many times, but they have not made any significant impact. It seems that people do not trust the security program that comes from Microsoft … Recently said Microsoft that they will shut down Live OneCare from the June 30, 2009. And at the same time, it will launch a safety package that is completely free. The aim is to ensure that all users have a strong protection against harmful code, viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc.

A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world’s biggest software maker is now testing an early version of the product with its own employees and that it will “soon” make a trial version available via its website.

I do not think that Microsoft will succeed especially well this time either. But I see clearly forward to test their free antivirus software. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft has to offer compared with the other free anti-viruses that are on the market. AVG and Avast, or why not new Panda Antivirus Cloud?

We will see what happens in future with Morro!

drupal

Drupal is a free publication system that is developing open source. It is a complete CMS – Content Management System, used to build and maintain websites. In a way you can compare it with WordPress, even if WordPress is mainly used for blogs (of course can you use it to ‘normal’ web sites as well).

If the man who signed is the right snowbound on WordPress, it is easy to overlook Drupal. But the fact is that there is a very wide range of users to it, and it developed all the time. And it also creates new beautiful themes that you can use to your website. Tripwire magazine, has in a blog entry list of 200 free themes for Drupal. These can you download and use as you want on your Drupal-based web site.
