Very many of us use free anti-virus software. I have it, as you know in a couple of my computers, but I also have commercial packages to some others. But can we really rely on an antivirus that is free? The serve is no money in them, so how could they keep up with developments?

In an interview criticizes David Hall, product manager at Symantec, the free antivirus programs pretty hard. He believes that they certainly can not offer as good protection from commercial software – such as Norton Antivirus and the others. According to Hall, is the technology of free antivirus, including Microsoft Security Essentials and the famous AVG and Avast!, Not sufficiently sophisticated to be able to protect against today’s virus attacks.

Most viruses spread today by web pages. This is called drive-by downloads, and means that you visit an infected Web page that automatically downloads and installs the virus on your computer. Virus infection occurs not only through the security hole in the browser, but it is very common to instead use a hole in the Appendix for the browser – QuickTime, RealPlayer and Flash. Hall explains that it is not at all certain that the free anti-virus software offers a good protection against this type of attacks. Better is to buy a security package.

What do you think?

microsoft-antivirus-morro1According to the Swedish magazine PC Magazine will Microsoft soon be launching an early test version of a free antivirus (codenamed “Morro”). Right now it seems that the employees on the company are testing the program. The news tells us also they will compete with McAfee and Symantec.

For just a little while ago I read about a director in of one of the leading antivirus companies. He said, inter alias, that Microsoft’s attempt to break into the market. He claimed that he was not especially worried about the competition. The thing is that Microsoft has tried to come in to the antivirus and security market many times, but they have not made any significant impact. It seems that people do not trust the security program that comes from Microsoft … Recently said Microsoft that they will shut down Live OneCare from the June 30, 2009. And at the same time, it will launch a safety package that is completely free. The aim is to ensure that all users have a strong protection against harmful code, viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc.

A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world’s biggest software maker is now testing an early version of the product with its own employees and that it will “soon” make a trial version available via its website.

I do not think that Microsoft will succeed especially well this time either. But I see clearly forward to test their free antivirus software. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft has to offer compared with the other free anti-viruses that are on the market. AVG and Avast, or why not new Panda Antivirus Cloud?

We will see what happens in future with Morro!

Acai Berry is one of all those BULLSHIT “drugs” as heeled to gullible people who want to lose weight. On Sophos, did I read that spammers have hacked into many Twitter users and used their account to send advertising for a store that sells Acai Berry.

To use social networking as Twitter and Facebook to send spam has become very popular because it works so much better than e-mail. When you send messages from the chopped accounts it looks as if it comes from someone you know or follow, and that increase the credibility. It means that more clicks through and shop.

twitter-spam

And, yes, people actually buy the products that spammers advertise. It works, unfortunately. If it had not done that we had not had any problems with spam…

How spammers have managed to hack the accounts appears to be uncertain. Presumably, it could be so simple that it has tested well-known password, and hit right here and there. This proves again the importance of having a good password.

The original post about Twitter-spam is available at Sophos.

spam-record

Viagra, lottery and miracle pill for weight loss. Do you think this fantastic offer in your spam basket is more than usual? It is true – the last days of spam traffic has actually beat all records.

On Tuesday was it sends over 250 billion spam messages. It is 50 billion more than the previous peak measured. An average day in April was just over 140 billion messages a day, according to Cisco IronPort, which maps out the global spam traffic. Cisco IronPort produces security products for web and email.

- It can be simplified comparing spam traffic on the Internet with the weather. Sometime it is bad weather, but right now the storm, “says Stefan Grinneby, head of Sitic, a unit of network security department at PTS.

It is about botnet, network of computers that have been taken over, is activated. Your computer can fall into a botnet by clicking on a link in a spam message. Then, software can seamlessly be downloaded to your computer and it becomes “hijacked”.

These networks are not always activated. But when they are activated so suddenly sent it a mass e-mails simultaneously. Say that 10 000 computers as part of a network, and they all send 1 000 e-mails each one day. Then it will be very many emails, “says Grinneby.

In October, could the judiciary catch the organization behind the bot-network McColo, and it shut down. There was a drastic decline in the spammer. But now have networks bandits catch up.

Other network has improved its structure and become much better. We believe that growth will continue to do this, fears Henrik Davidsson, Nordic Manager at Cisco IronPort.

How protect you your computer:

Never open a spam message. There has been that computers are infected only by a mail opened. Throw it away.

Never click on links or open attachments in an email. That is how your computer is infected.

Get firewall and antivirus software. Update them continuously.

Do you Notice that your computer is behaving strangely – it going slow or sending things on the Internet – leave it for service.

You discover that your information such as account information, spread on the net – block card.

YouTube allows users to leave comments on video clips, which is natural because it is a social site. The problem with letting anyone post comments is that it published a lot of junk, and among these are some dangerous things. Panda Security announces that it has measured up to nearly 5000 films on YouTube that have comments with links to sites that spread dangerous code.

“This technique of using harmful comments on YouTube is not a new phenomenon in itself. What is alarming is the huge amount of infected links that lead to one and same webpage. We believe that the cyber criminals use of an automated tool to do this,” says Panda Security in Sweden.

The Comments containing usually links to what look like pornographic website. When the user clicks through to the site, must he download a special video player to watch porno films. Of course, there is no player that can be downloaded. Instead, is there PrivacyCenter, a fake antivirus.

.

privacy-center-scareware

PrivateCenter will then scan through the user’s computer, it purports to be a legitimate antivirus program, and they find a lot bugs, cookies and virus. The threats are totally fabricated to fool the now infected user to pay a registration fee as required, so “viruses” can be removed. This type of fake security software called scareware.

So don’t download anything you don’t know what it is to 100%.

virus

The virus “Downadup” continues to spread. According to security company F-Secure had the virus round the 20 January 2009 already infected 8.9 million computers. Many believed that there was the peak. But that is not the case. The virus has continued to spread, to mutate to the other versions. Therefore, it is difficult for antivirus programs to end the misery.

“Downadup” spreads by exploiting a security hole in Windows. Have you the function “Automatic Updates” turned on, closes the security hole automatically.

The best way to avoid “Downadup is so clearly to having a really good antivirus program, which ensures that the virus does not install itself on your computer. However, if the misfortune is arrived and one of the versions of Downadup – or Conficker and Kido, which they also is called – infecting your PC, there is still opportunity to save the system.

Security company BitDefender has for safety’s sake, has developed a software to remove Downadup – from an infected computer. Downadup Removal Tool can be downloaded free on the website BDTools.

If you are worried about the infection, you can easily check it with the boot a ‘Quick Scan’ via the website bdtools.net
