Local Market in Costa del Sol

Don’t miss the local market. One or two days a week each town and village on Costa del Sol, hosts its mercardo; Local market, it is an important part of the Spanish life; it is one of the high point of the week. They are noisy, fun, colourful, entertaining and an experience not to be missed, whether you plan to buy anything or not. The market has provided for generations the local community with a huge variety of products and every one is different. Some of the markets are combination of flea markets and car boot sales where you can really do bargains. Why not visit one of the many local markets and feel the atmosphere of the Spanish style.

What do the markets offer?

Vegetable and fruit: If you are a lover of fresh fruits, nuts, olives, vegetables, herbs and flowers then the weekly town and village markets are the best places to buy it. You can’t find it cheaper anywhere or better quality else.

Ceramic and Pottery: Andalucía produces a lot of ceramic and pottery. Every region has its own styles and varieties. The crockery, plant pots and tiles are cheap, often original and exquisitely finished.

Leather: It is one of the most popular purchases for holiday visitors. Jackets, belts, bags and shoes and still a real bargain compared with prices anywhere else in Europe.

Rugs: Inexpensive and colourful, rugs made in several areas in Andalucía, you can find them at any markets.

Handicrafts: The bulk of the jewellery for sale at the markets is imported but you can be lucky enough to find some of the delicate silver filigree jewellery made in Cordoba. Granada produces beautiful woodwork and you'll find plenty of marquetry boxes, chess sets and much more at most of the markets along the coast, especially the ones nearer to GranadaAlmuñecar.

On Every market.

More and less in every market you can find local goods as flowers, plants, furniture, hand-made jewellery, clothes, shoes, hardware, linen, antiques things and many traditional Andalusian products. The markets are a great place to buy Moorish pottery, closeness of Morocco, Arabic metalwork, wood and brassware. Senegalese carved wood statues also along with imported handicrafts from Thailand and Indonesia such as rattan, clothing and jewellery. Other imported items which are from fake designer like watches, bags, sunglasses and clothing as well as copy CD's. As long as you buy these items with the knowledge that they come with only one guarantee - you will never get your money back under any circumstances – this is fine. And don’t forget, half of the pleasure is to try haggle to get a better deal, if you’re Spanish that is good enough.

Which markets sell what?

Most of the markets sell almost anything you could wish for, but it is important to know which markets sell what! Some example;

Fuengirola's weekly Tuesday market, is the biggest market on the coast and it attracts visitors from nearby resorts as well as the local’s residence. It offer you lots of fruits, vegetable, plants, olives, nuts, ceramic, pottery, leader, handicrafts, housewares and traditional Andalusian produce. Many of the stalls sell the same so try haggle. Around the market there are lots of bars so you can have a rest and take a drink and eat something.

Estepona street market on Wednesday, at Avda. Juan Carlos. It offers you Fresh fruits, vegetable, flowers, shoes, leader, local Andalusia products, and the usual tourist products in a friendly atmosphere.

Fuengirola Saturday market. Come early, it is a huge second hand, flea and boot market. Packed with bargains. A perfect place if you have just moved to Spain and are looking for unusual items to fill up your new home, from second hand clothing to antique maps, second hand TY, video equipment, furniture as well as household items and thousands of cheap second-hand tings.

Nueva Andalucia Saturday market, around the bullring opposite Puerto Banus. Absolute the best market for antiques and art from Spain and from other countries around the world. Beautiful furniture, mirrors lamps, crystals, hand made jewellery, carpets, sculptures and artisans.

Sabanillas Sunday market. If it's a real bargain you're after, this is a combination market for fresh fruits and vegetables, second hand, flea and boot market which has grown and grown in popularity. The saying. "The early bird catches the worm" certainly is true here.
